What is it about Trey Songz that drives us crazy? Is it his smile that can light up 10 Christmas trees, probably, but maybe it’s his amazing body, I think you can wash your whole laundry basket on those abs? But even if you take away all his attributes it’s his voice that’s what really makes him the total package.Meeting up with Trey at his record label on a rainy NYC day, a little around noontime was interesting. Although it was raining like cats and dogs outside, inside the Atlantic records sitting area were we conducted our interview it felt like a sunny day because Trey was overjoyed by the prospect that his next album is on the horizon. Recalling his days back in Virginia Trey’s eyes light up. Trey says he first ventured into the music business at 19 and admits he was schooled a lot and today he is a better man because of it. Now almost 5 years in the game, Trey likens himself to a savvy businessman. “I have grown in so many ways since I came into the business. I am working on branding myself and really letting people know that I am versatile, I think that my new album will definetly show just that.” Tentatively scheduled for the beginning of August, now pushed back until September 1st, Trey says, that its important that he is completely satisfied with his work, “I don’t tell this to many people but I have goals set in my head for myself, its not on paper and one of those goals is to never be put in a box. I don’t want to be known as just doing R&B, I want people to recognize me period as a great singer that has no boundaries.” That task may be daunting for a singer that has primarily been known as just an R&B talent, but Trey has set goals before he said and he conquered, “I want people to know that really I never thought growing up I would be a singer. We were poor growing up in Virginia, we didn’t even have tapes or CD’s we just had the radio. I also didn’t grow up in the choir or anything. But what I did do was sing. I would sing everywhere and anything that came on the radio, I also rapped a little too.” ![]() Trey says that it wasn’t until his friends convinced him that he really could sing that he took notice. “I mean it was cool that they thought I could sing because you know it’s your people.” Trey admits that although he got love from his friends, his family was a little skeptical. “I will never forget my first talent show. I found out years later that my Mom and Grandma made everyone they knew come out that night and support me because they thought I might get booed.” But Trey got something far from being booed. He met up with the producer Troy Taylor a man Trey credits with changing his life and getting him his record deal. Now with a host of work under his belt including two previous studio albums, and with his third album coming down the pike Trey says he is ready now more than ever. Maybe that’s why Trey choose the name “Ready” for the album title because he says that sums up the way he is feeling right now and is ready to give his fans what they want. And that is what he says is great music.” “I got great songs on this album, I really worked hard with trying to put together a diverse selection of songs, not just one or two good songs, but putting myself out there creatively.” With feature’s already including Fabolous, Gucci Mane, The Game, Amere and up incomer Drake, to name a few Trey says it was worth the push back to get the best music to make his fans happy. Trey also puts forth a genuine appreciation for the fans, he admits he is addicted to Twitter and says that everyday he sends out positive messages to everyone that follows him. “I am spiritual and believe I am very blessed so I want to send those blessing back to the people that have helped me. I always everyday send out positive affirmations, so follow me on twitter.” However sometimes being so tech savvy can run you into problems, Trey accidenttly posted his phone number while tweeting and had to change his number because he said he was getting 100 calls a minute. Trey also reveled that he is currently single, but says although his current single is titled “I Need a Girl” that might not necessarily co-exist with his non-stop life style. “I never stop I am actually running on no sleep right now, I came right from my studio in the ATL to NYC today. I would like a girl I could talk to though, this music business is 90% business and its crazy, it would be nice to have a girl to talk to and tell my feelings too.” When Trey isn’t working he says he does enjoy bowling, basketball, and music. He tells us that he loves writing music on his off time, but there haven’t been many days off in a long time. “I have been touring and working in the studio for a while now. I really haven’t had a chance to chill. But when I do chill I love being around my family and friends. That time is special to me.”But these days Trey Songz is busier then ever and loving every minute of it. Trey says he will continue to live his life for his fans and test the boundaries because he has no intentions to stay within the lines.
